Layer 2 — GA4

Now confirm GA4 actually receives what the dataLayer pushed.

  • Turn on GTM Preview mode. Walk the same flow. For each dataLayer event, confirm a GA4 hit goes out — and that the outgoing event name matches a clean lowercase form (form_start, not Form Start).
  • Open GA4's Admin → DebugView in another tab. Confirm the event appears with the right parameters within a few seconds.
  • In GA4, go to Admin → Key Events. Confirm your primary conversion(s) are marked. Just having the event in GA4 isn't enough — Google Ads can only import Key Events.
  • Spot-check the Reports → Realtime view. Are the right events appearing in roughly the right volumes? Are there events you don't recognize?

Layer 3 — ad platforms

Once GA4 looks right, audit each ad platform directly via its own console or API. You can't trust a platform's measurement just because GA4 looks clean — every platform has its own measurement surface that's independent of GA4.

Google Ads. Open Goals → Conversions. For each conversion action, confirm:

  • Status reads Recording conversions — not No recent conversions or Verification not complete.
  • Most recent conversion is within the last day or two.
  • Enhanced Conversions is on and accepting data — not Not yet receiving data.

Meta. Open Events Manager → Pixel + CAPI. For each event, confirm:

  • Matched events count is healthy and consistent with your traffic.
  • Pixel + CAPI deduplication rate is high — every server event has a matching browser event.
  • Event Match Quality (EMQ) per event is 6 or higher. Below 6 means you're losing match opportunities.

TikTok. Open Events Manager → Pixel + Events API. For each event, confirm:

  • Events are firing on both surfaces (Pixel and Events API).
  • Deduplication is working — no double-counted conversions.
  • Match rate is healthy on the Events API side.
Ad-platform health ≠ GA4 health A common mistake is to call the audit done once GA4 looks clean. Each ad platform has its own measurement that can be broken independently — wrong conversion import, mismatched Pixel events, CAPI silently not firing. Audit each one directly.

What to fix first — automation impact, not severity

You'll find a list. Don't fix it in alphabetical order. Fix it in order of how much each gap is costing your automation.

  1. Anything killing primary-conversion signal. A purchase event missing on confirmation, a generate_lead trigger that doesn't fire — these starve Smart Bidding completely. Fix today.
  2. Stale OCI / CAPI uploads. If your most valuable conversions (qualified leads, post-trial conversions, repeat purchases) come back via offline conversion imports and that's silent, the algorithm is missing your highest-quality signal. Fix this week.

Reconciling GA4 with Google Ads, Meta, and TikTok
